At least 15 people have died in a devastating crash between a bus carrying seniors and a truck near Carberry, along the Trans-Canada Highway in Manitoba, Canada. The bus, traveling from Dauphin to Sand Hills Casino, collided with a truck in an incident described by witnesses as a “huge accident,” with one vehicle engulfed in flames.
Ten others, including both drivers, were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Emergency crews, including an air ambulance and over a dozen paramedics, responded swiftly to the scene.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the collision. Early footage suggests the truck had the right of way, but RCMP officials have emphasized that no conclusions have been drawn yet.
The crash echoes the 2018 Humboldt Broncos tragedy, prompting Manitoba officials to consult investigators from that case.
William Doherty, CEO of the trucking company involved, expressed deep sorrow and pledged full cooperation with authorities. “Our thoughts are with those affected. We hope for the recovery of the injured,” he stated.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also issued a statement, calling the incident “incredibly tragic” and offering condolences and support to the victims’ families.
The town of Dauphin, home to many of the victims, has been deeply shaken. Mayor David Bosiak said the loss has affected nearly everyone in the close-knit community: “There’s a collective sense of grief. It’s a heartbreaking day for our town.”
