Born in 1937 in Chicago’s South Side, Marian Lois Shields Robinson was one of seven children and deeply rooted in values of family and community. She married Fraser C. Robinson III, a World War II veteran, and raised two children: Michelle and Craig. She was instrumental in shaping their character through her quiet strength, deep integrity, and unwavering belief in education and hard work.

When Barack Obama was elected president, Marian made the rare move to live in the White House, offering her granddaughters Malia and Sasha stability amidst national spotlight. Though she shunned publicity, her presence was a steady force behind the scenes.

Michelle Obama called her mother her “rock.” Barack Obama praised her grace and humility. As tributes pour in, Marian Robinson is remembered not only as a devoted mother and grandmother, but as a quiet symbol of strength, love, and dignity.
