When Cassie returns from a family getaway, she finds a mysterious note from her mother telling her to watch a video. As she hits play, everything she thought she knew about her life is turned upside down. Now, she’s left questioning whether either of her parents deserves forgiveness.
Cassie had always idolized her father. He was her hero, always there when she needed him despite his busy travel schedule as a businessman. He would often remind her, “You’re my little girl, Cassie. You’re the most special.”
Her parents made sure to prioritize her, ensuring family dinners almost every night, something that grounded her while her friends were dealing with their parents’ divorces.
One day, when Cassie was fourteen, she casually mentioned to her mother that divorce seemed trendy because so many of her classmates lived between two homes. Her mother, amused, explained that divorce was far from trendy — it was traumatic. That conversation, however, seemed to trigger something that would change Cassie’s life.
A few weeks later, Cassie’s father went on a business trip and was reported dead soon after. Her mother claimed it was sudden, but the details were vague. The funeral was unconventional, with Cassie’s father being cremated and his ashes scattered at the beach, something Cassie initially found odd but ultimately accepted.
After the beach ceremony, Cassie’s life seemed to carry on, though the weight of her father’s absence weighed heavily on her. Years passed, and Cassie, now married with a son, took a family vacation to a cabin in the woods. She left her mother to house-sit for the week, and upon returning, found that her mother was gone, leaving only a note and a cryptic message: “Watch this, Cassie. I’m sorry.”
Cassie watched the video, and to her shock, it was her father’s voice, alive and well, explaining that he had faked his death to escape the painful truth of his past. He begged Cassie to ask her mother for the truth.
Cassie rushed to her mother, demanding answers. Over tea and shortbread, her mother revealed a shocking truth — her father was already married to another woman when he was with Cassie’s mother. He had chosen his other family over hers, and to protect Cassie from the truth, her mother had let her believe he was dead.
Cassie was devastated to learn that the man she had loved was not who she thought he was, and the funeral they had held was a lie — they had scattered dust, not his ashes. Her mother had kept the secret for years but, now that her father was dying, had decided to reveal everything to Cassie.
Cassie eventually visited her father, now in poor health, and spent time with him, listening to his regrets and his love for her. When he passed away, she was left with mixed emotions. She didn’t know if she could ever forgive him for living a double life, but in his final moments, she was grateful for the time they shared. Now, Cassie faces the difficult question of whether she can forgive her mother for hiding the truth all these years.
