Gerry Turner, known from The Golden Bachelor, recently opened up about his battle with a slow-growing form of bone marrow cancer that doctors have classified as incurable. Despite the challenging diagnosis, Turner, 73, remains optimistic and says he is feeling great.
On the April 15 episode of the Bachelor Happy Hour podcast, Turner spoke candidly with hosts Joe Amabile and Serena Pitt about how he has been managing life since learning about his condition. He revealed that he has not needed to change his daily routine and continues regular blood tests every six months.
“My doctor told me that when I turn 75, I’ll need to have tests every three months,” Turner explained. “That means I’m expected to live at least a couple more years to reach that milestone. I really feel good.”
Turner also shared how the diagnosis has changed his outlook on life. “Since getting this news, I feel like I’m living each day as if it might be my last,” he said. “I don’t say no to any opportunity anymore. I’m more open to my emotions and experiences.”
He added, “When someone asks me if I want to go somewhere or do something, I say yes before they even finish the question. This mindset has made life exciting because I know the time I have is uncertain, so I want to embrace every moment.”
Turner first announced his diagnosis in December 2024, revealing he has Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia—a rare cancer that causes white blood cells to become cancerous and build up in the bone marrow. This type of cancer mainly affects men over 70 and currently has no cure, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Following his diagnosis, Turner focused on living as normally as possible, prioritizing quality time with his family—his two daughters, sons-in-law, and granddaughters.
Though initially in denial, Turner found inspiration in Tim McGraw’s song Live Like You’re Dying. “I’ve learned to accept it and find peace. I want to fill my life with joy and appreciate every moment. When my time comes, I’ll be ready—but I refuse to have regrets,” he shared.
Despite the challenges, Gerry Turner’s positive outlook offers hope and a reminder to embrace life fully, no matter the circumstances.
