During the summers of my childhood in the 1970s, I spent many days working alongside my father baling hay under the warm sun. I always carried a small transistor radio in my pocket, and every lunchtime, I’d retreat to the shade of a tree, unpack my meal, and listen to Paul Harvey.

Hearing his voice today instantly transports me back to those peaceful afternoons—times when life felt simpler and my family—parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, and uncles—were all still around. Those memories remain vivid and cherished, woven into the gentle rustling of hay and the steady drone of the tractor.

From 1952 until 2008, Paul Harvey’s voice reached up to 24 million listeners weekly. His programs aired on over 1,200 radio stations, 400 Armed Forces Network channels, and were printed in 300 newspapers, becoming a fixture of American culture. Many recall his famous segment, “The Rest of the Story,” where he combined storytelling and insight, often ending with an unexpected twist.

There was something special about how Paul Harvey spoke. His calm, familiar tone invited listeners to pause, reflect, and sometimes see the world through a different lens. For decades, he encouraged curiosity, thoughtfulness, and provided a comforting presence in daily life. I often wonder if we still carve out time for such meaningful listening—those quiet moments that inspire deeper thinking.

One of his most enduring works was an essay he revised over the years, open to many interpretations—symbolic, spiritual, and literal—and still sparking discussion today.

Perhaps his most iconic moment was the reading of “So God Made a Farmer,” a heartfelt tribute to the hardworking caretakers of the land and their communities. First aired in 1978 and later featured in a memorable Super Bowl commercial, the piece resonated deeply. Coupled with striking visuals and Harvey’s distinctive voice, it celebrated the quiet strength and perseverance of everyday people.

Whether you grew up with Paul Harvey’s broadcasts or discovered them later, his impact is timeless. His words continue to resonate—not only for their wisdom but for the reassurance they offer in uncertain times.

As he often closed, “And now you know… the rest of the story.”
