The U.S. Navy community is grieving the loss of two devoted aviators after a tragic plane crash near Mount Rainier, Washington. Lt. Cmdr. Catherine Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, both from California, were on a routine training mission when their EA-18G Growler aircraft crashed in a remote mountainous area.
The crash occurred at about 6,000 feet in a forested region where difficult terrain and weather delayed rescue operations. Recovery teams later confirmed that both pilots had died in the accident.
Lt. Cmdr. Evans was a well-respected leader in naval aviation, gaining national attention in 2023 for her role in the historic all-female flyover at Super Bowl LVII, marking 50 years of women in naval aviation. Known for her professionalism and leadership, she was a mentor to many and a passionate supporter of future aviators.
Lt. Wileman, commissioned in 2018, joined the prestigious Electronic Attack Squadron 130—the “Zappers”—in 2021. Her colleagues described her as focused, mission-driven, and an essential part of the team. Both had recently returned from a deployment in the Middle East, where they supported operations in the Red Sea and contributed to regional security. Commander Timothy Warburton of the Zappers expressed his sorrow: “We share the heavy loss of two valued squadron members. Our thoughts are with their families during this difficult time.”
President Joe Biden also expressed his condolences and gratitude for their service, acknowledging their recent deployment and commitment. “Jill and I are deeply saddened by this news. These brave service members embodied the very best of our nation.”
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash. Meanwhile, tributes from military and civilian communities have highlighted the pilots’ dedication, professionalism, and character.
Lt. Cmdr. Evans and Lt. Wileman are remembered as pioneers and role models who served with distinction and inspired others through their commitment. Their careers reflected the courage, dedication, and excellence that define naval aviation.
The Navy is supporting the families and arranging memorial services to honor their memory. Though their loss is deeply felt, their legacy will continue to motivate future generations.
