January 26, 2022, marks the 13th anniversary of the historic birth of octuplets that drew global attention.
On this day in 2009, six boys and two girls were born via cesarean section in the United States, making headlines around the world. Their mother, Nadia Suleman, who was 34 years old at the time, was already raising six children, bringing her total number of kids to 14—all conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) without the involvement of a partner.
Suleman revealed that her fertility doctor implanted 12 embryos, resulting in the multiple pregnancy. She claimed she was misled about the procedure. This controversial case led to the revocation of the doctor’s medical license for ethical violations and prompted tighter regulations on IVF practices in the U.S.
Nicknamed “Octomom” by the media, Suleman received both criticism and support. She has stated that her decision to have more children was motivated by love rather than a desire for fame or money, although she later appeared in reality TV and other media to support her large family.
Today, the Suleman family lives a modest but stable life. Nadia is active on social media, frequently posting updates about her octuplets and promoting a healthy, vegan lifestyle.
Despite the many challenges, the family presents an image of happiness and unity.
