“You should be a wife, not a guest!” my husband shouted when I refused to make lunch for his family.

Nika always tried to be Lev’s perfect wife—cooking, cleaning, and maintaining their home—unaware that her efforts to please everyone were slowly erasing her own identity.

One Sunday morning, while preparing breakfast, Lev told her that his mother and sister Kristina, along with Kristina’s energetic twins, were coming for lunch. Nika felt anxious but kept calm, knowing the visit would be chaotic.

Despite Nika’s hard work cooking and cleaning, the guests arrived, and the twins immediately caused messes. Lev’s mother dismissed the mess and pressured Nika to be more accommodating. Kristina boasted about her cooking and suggested weekly Sunday gatherings at their home, much to Nika’s dismay.

When Nika requested a day off from hosting, Lev’s family reacted with frustration and insisted on tradition. The tension grew until Nika firmly declared she needed rest and refused to cook every Sunday.

After the guests left, Lev confronted Nika, accusing her of humiliating him and ignoring family duties. Hurt and exhausted, Nika realized she was valued less than his mother and sister.

That night, Nika packed and told Lev she was leaving to stay with her friend Alina. Despite Lev’s pleas, she was determined to reclaim her life.

At Alina’s apartment, Nika felt free from family pressures and began living for herself. Lev visited later, promising change, but Nika was no longer willing to compromise. She finalized a divorce and moved into her own place.

Reflecting on her journey, Nika understood that living to please others had cost her peace and identity. Now, she chose to prioritize herself, embracing a life on her own terms.
